New XMC Module Mates Configurable Virtex-5 FPGA with High-Speed PCIe Interface and Deep Memory

New XMC Module with Virtex-5 FPGA

Wixom, MI (PRWEB) October 15, 2010

Acromag’s new XMC FPGA module, the XMC-VLX, features a configurable Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA enhanced with multiple high-speed memory buffers and a high-throughput PCIe interface. Field I/O interfaces to the FPGA via the rear J4/P4 connector and/or with optional front mezzanine plug-in I/O modules. The result is a powerful and flexible I/O processor module that is capable of executing custom instruction sets and algorithms. Typical uses include hardware simulation, military servers, in-circuit diagnostics, communications, signal intelligence, and image processing. The boards start at $ 5750 with several options for FPGA logic capacity and extended temperature operation.

Three models provide a choice of logic-optimized FPGAs to match the performance requirements. Cards can be ordered with a Xilinx VLX85T, VLX110T, or VLX155T FPGA featuring up to 155,000 logic cells and 128 DSP48E slices. Each model is ready for use in conduction-cooled systems and offers an option to upgrade with extended temperature range parts suitable for -40 to 85°C operation.

64 I/O lines are accessible through the rear (J4) connector. Additional I/O processing is supported on a separate mezzanine card that plugs into the FPGA base board. A variety of these mezzanine I/O cards are available to provide front-end 14-bit 105 MHz A/D conversions or an interface for CMOS digital I/O, RS-485 differential signals, or extra LVDS I/O lines.

Large, high-speed memory banks provide efficient data handling. Generous 32M x 32-bit DDR2 SDRAM buffers store captured data prior to FPGA processing. The data is directly accessible through the FPGA. Afterward, data is moved to the 1M x 64-bit dual-ported SRAM for high-speed DMA transfer to the bus or CPU. This memory provides direct links from the PCIe bus and to the FPGA. The high-bandwidth PCIe 4-lane interface ensures fast data throughput.

Acromag’s Engineering Design Kit provides utilities to help users develop custom programs, load VHDL into the FPGA and to establish DMA transfers between the FPGA and the CPU. The kit includes a compiled FPGA file and example VHDL code provided as selectable blocks with examples for the local bus interface, read/writes, and change-of-state interrupts to the PCI bus. A JTAG interface allows users to perform on-board VHDL simulation. Further analysis is supported with a ChipScope™ Pro interface.

Kilopass Introduces 90-nanometer Standard CMOS
Embedded Non-volatile Memory Technology for Secure Storage of System Firmware and Chip IDs

(PRWEB) October 21, 2004

XPMÂ?s process scalability, low cost, high density & data security

key to customer acceptance

Santa Clara, CA ARM DevelopersÂ? Conference Â? October 19, 2004 Â? Kilopass Technology, Inc., an emerging supplier of embedded non-volatile memory (NVM) Intellectual Property (IP) based in Santa Clara, California, today announced that its XPM technology is now available for use in ASICs and SoCs using standard logic CMOS 90 nanometer silicon processes in addition to its current products utilizing 0.18, 0.15, and 0.13 micron processes.

XPM, a unique embedded one-time-programmable (OTP) NVM technology, offers the combination of scalability to advanced silicon processes such as 90 nanometer, low standard logic CMOS fabrication cost, storage density from a few bits to up to multiple mega bits and highly secure storage. With its complete range of bit sizes and its wide variety of applications XPM can enhance almost any chip design.

Dr. Jack Peng, CEO, Kilopass Technology, noted, Â?We have shipped our patented XPM technology to over a dozen customers, and are very pleased to announced that we have tested and verified silicon, in 90 nanometers, with 1,000 hours of burn-in, and that our customers expect to move from silicon prototypes to high volume manufacturing in the next few months.Â?

As a replacement for external memory chips XPM technology can be used in high density embedded memory applications for publishing games, movies and other multimedia content, as well as for secure firmware storage in embedded MCU and DSP-based systems. XPM can also be used for secure ID and data storage for smart cards, for embedded ID and parameter storage, for storing encryption keys, for analog trimming and calibration parameter storage, for storing unique configuration codes and for embedded memory repair.

More about XPM Technology

XPMÂ?s patented fuse-programmable technology uses 1.5 transistors per memory cell, is programmable with a low program current by either an external or internal voltage source, and offers a fast read access time of 40nsec ~ 70nsec (for 1Mbit, 0.18 micron process).

Applications requiring more than one-time programming can use a multiple sector approach with a minimal die area penalty. For example sizing up from 1K bits of XPM-based memory to 8K bits offers eight sectors for limited-time re-programmability and it adds a negligible amount of die area.

XPM Memory Technology Reliability & Security

XPM technology is highly secure. Data is permanently retained for the life of most systems (over 20 years), and is protected from reverse engineering, since it is not possible to detect the stored data with a microscope or by voltage contrast testing.

Availability

Licenses for XPM memory technology are available now, and include GDSII layouts as well as simulation and timing models.

Within five years digital camera memory card technology has advanced to include enhancements in memory card reliability, capacity and the range of uses.   The fast response time of the memory card industry to the needs of end-users has placed high-definition video and rapid, continuous shoot photography comfortably in the hands of digital camera and miniaturized electronics-users everywhere–feature films with DSLR camera video? –Doable.   And with the astonishing capabilities of memory, of course, has come increased choice and more complexity.   A few simple considerations follow below for camera memory card users.
Good things come in small packages in the digital world, but small packages can often be easy to imitate.   On the web, memory cards for digital cameras might have a logo similar to that of an established brand.   It may be attractively packaged and less expensive.   However, imitation cards or cards that have attractive logos may not use the memory technology of the main stream memory cards, and may even have been produced with sub-standard manufacturing processes to save money.   It may even be a different type of memory technology, other than advertised.   Cards are not perfect and therefore are, occasionally, subject to failure.   But imitation brands will do so at a much higher rate than the more dependable manufacturers.   As a rule of thumb, if it doesn’t come from a familiar manufacturer, some due diligence may be necessary.
Generally, accidentally deleted files or images on your camera memory card can be restored just as files on your desktop hard disk can.   While memory cards for cameras are solid state drives, the cards still use tables for storing information about files and how to locate them.   Under normal circumstances a lost file can be recovered within a few steps.   To ensure the likelihood of file recovery some memory card producers are shipping recovery software with their camera memory cards, sometimes pre-installed.
The old saying about not putting all our eggs in one basket is still a sound idea.   As an example, many professional photographers are buying a few 4GB memory cards instead of using a single 16GB card, lessening the likelihood of losing all their work to a single memory card failure.   This technique of spreading the risk over many cards works as well with four 16 GB cards as it does with four 2GB cards, since the basic idea is the more the better, and it is used to protect against the failure of one card.
If you prefer normal-sized photos, you can ensure enough space on your memory card by selecting the smaller image size as you take pictures, especially if you don’t seek poster-sized images.   Another way in which technology has kept in step with this concern is a wireless camera memory card with built-in wireless functionality.   Photographs can be downloaded wirelessly from your camera to your computer.
Today’s digital cameras take image information from a CCD (charge-coupled device) or CMOS sensor (complimentary metal oxide semiconductor) for the most digitized data about your picture.   And camera memory cards can hold more of these files when they are compressed than when they are in their normal digital form.   Some photographers prefer these high-resolution images or . RAW files because the data contained in the images can offer more control for creative photographers.   Generally used on DSLR cameras, these files can be very large, and can require larger capacity cards.
