It’s been a long time since people have seen a new video gaming console in the market. Many people have been crazy about Sony’s PlayStation 2, about Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube. However, this was about 5 or 6 years ago. Now, people are anticipating the next generation in video game systems that claim to change the way people see video game consoles. With the latest technology integrated in the new line of video game consoles, many people are anticipating the release of the new gaming console of the three large companies. Here is a glimpse of what you can expect with the next generation gaming console that are still being anticipated by lots of gaming fans all over the world. Here are the different upcoming and highly anticipated gaming consoles and their specifications:Sony PlayStation 3Sony PlayStation 3 will be released on November of 2006 and claims to use Blu-ray discs as its media format. The Blu-ray disc is capable of holding six times as much data than today’s DVDs. With this kind of feature, it will open new doors for game developers to develop new and better quality games. For graphics, Sony PlayStation 3 will be using the RSX (Reality synthesizer) which was based on Nvidia technology. Sony Claims that the Graphics Processing Unit or GPU integrated in the PlayStation is capable of 128bit pixel reduction and 1080p resolution. The RSX will also be capable of displaying better graphics with 512MB memory and is also capable of shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. Microsoft XboxIt is a fact that the look of this new console is very attractive. But, what’s more important is what you will find under the shell. Microsoft also developed an impressive gaming system that can compete with the next generation of gaming systems. The Microsoft Xbox 360 will be integrated with an IBM PowerPC-based CPU that runs as fast as 3. 2GHz and over half a gigabyte of RAM. The Xbox 360 will also contain one of the best graphics technology ever made by ATI that is capable of advanced antialiasing and shader effects. What this means is that it will have 720p and 1080i wide screen high definition TV. These features will double the resolution of the original Xbox that maxed out only at 480p. This new game system developed by Microsoft will also support up to four wireless controls. Nintendo Revolution (renamed as Nintendo Wii)Nintendo is also one of the gaming consoles that are currently developing one of the most anticipated gaming systems by gaming fans. Nintendo claims to release a video game system called the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo Wii is integrated with PowerPC CPU Broadway manufactured by IBM and has a 90nm SOI CMOS process. A controller that looks like a regular TV remote control will contain motion sensors that will be useful to upcoming Wii games, such as Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess and Red Steel. This technology is first of its kind in the gaming console world and is also being anticipated by a lot of people. Nintendo Wii will be integrated with an ATI graphics card and a RAM memory as high as 512 MB. It will also feature wireless controllers, 2 USB ports and a built-in antenna for WiFi internet access. However, it will not support HD output but with a 480p progressive scan and wide screen friendly mode, it will still essentially look good on HDTV. Wii will also have a backward compatibility feature, which means that it will be able to support previously developed Nintendo games, even old games from NES, Super NES, and GameCube. Nintendo Wii also declared that their system will be able to access and surf the internet and will also enable you to access other Wii channels that you will surely entertain you. These are the three highly anticipated video game systems that claim to revolutionize the way people see video game consoles. With these features, you’ll really never know what new gaming console will appear in the near future. So, if you want to know more about these new generation video game systems, you should wait for the upcoming release and try it out in stores near you.

24th International Conference on VLSI Design & 10th on Embedded Systems inaugurated

Chennai, January 4, 2011: Delivering the keynote address, Thomas H Lee, Professor, Stanford University, said,”VLSI Design and embedded systems are core technologies that are behind the electronic products that we use widely today including cell phones, music players, and computers. There is a need to have discussions on the trend and future of this segment as these are the backbone of all electronics used widely today in various domains such as Communications, Consumer, Industrial, Automotive, Defense and Health Care. I strongly believe embedded to be the next big thing driven by the increasing pervasiveness of microprocessors in all walks of life.”

Speaking on VLSI Design from Indian academician perspective, Praveen Vishakantaiah, President, Intel India said, “With India projected to consume billion worth of embedded electronics by 2020 it is emerging as a market of focus and the future. The key challenge we face today is lack of research efforts and researches. This is critical as that is the pinnacle of the embedded and VLSI arena and fuels innovation. An encouraging sign is the increasing number of partnerships companies in this space are entering into with educational institutes for doing research programs and internships.”

Kamakoti, General Co-Chair, VLSI and Professor at Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT-Madras speaking on the general vision of VLSI Design Conference 2011 said, “One area of focus for the conference is to make students understand the phenomenal opportunity in the embedded and VLSI arena. And by listening to and seeing the innovations happening be inspired to take it to greater heights through their intelligence and effort. Realizing this importance, we have designed the conference with several complementary parts – full-day tutorials, research paper presentations, special sessions with invited embedded tutorials, hot topic presentations, keynote and banquet talks, and the industry and education forums.”

In his comments, Prof. Vishwani Agrawal of Auburn University, US and Member of VLSI committee, added, “VLSI Design 2011 will definitely add value to the industry by providing a platform for the experts to discuss the issues of this industry. Law enforcement recently has been following the general tide of government and public service groundswell by seeking computing solutions in the Linux direction. Particularly in law enforcement, their needs match well with open source software. They have to work lean on a taxpayer’s budget, and open source is free or low cost. They need top security, and Linux is still the highest-scoring operating software in official government assessments. They need mission-critical reliability, and Linux is so stable, it doesn’t just outrank the competition in stability – it makes the competition disappear!
Some recent examples of law enforcement agencies finding a solution in open source:
* Kent Police have lowered the cost of running their major criminal investigations system by a factor of 90% using Novell Linux Open Enterprise Server. The migration to Novell enabled Kent to scale up their Holmes II investigation system to work on larger projects with a broader scope – something they’d never been able to do before. They were also able to run it on their cheapest hardware they could find, thanks to Linux’s light requirements. A new policing operating system, named Genesis, is now being tested for scalability on Linux servers.
* Delivery of the first Linux systems to the West Yorkshire police force could see police forces throughout England and Wales unanimously switching to Linux desktops in a new pilot scheme. The deployment is taking place under a contract awarded by the UK Police IT Organization. If successful, it will lead to over 60,000 desktops deployed. In West Yorkshire alone, the installed base is around 3,500, and a spokesman reckoned that the savings from this would be around one million pounds per year!
* The New South Wales Police department is currently undertaking a major upgrade to its information infrastructure, made necessary due to the increasing volume of data handled by the force, and they’re switching to Linux systems to handle the load. Because the Linux systems are proving so reliable, they are looking forward to the higher capacity network more efficiently archiving and transmitting data stored as evidence, such as surveillance videos and audio material.
* Scottish police forces have also developed a Linux-based system for ensuring that they comply with the Freedom of Information Act legislation, an act which is intended to facilitate ‘open government’ by allowing the public to request access to government data. Since open source and open information go hand in hand, the system has scaled easily and saved tons of labor. The force doesn’t have to worry about proprietary media formats interfering with the public’s ability to access the data, and the efficiency of the Linux system allows a lot of manual tasks to be automated where they couldn’t before. The system is literally returning officers to the streets because it has saved everyone so much work.
* Police in the city of Munich have switched 14,000 of their department computers from Microsoft’s Windows operating system to Linux. The motivation for the decision was to make the government less dependent on one information technology supplier, and to save money while increasing capabilities. One technology analyst even compared the break-through migration to the fall of the Berlin wall, referring to the oppressive requirements of dealing with a proprietary software company’s agenda.
That government feels friendly with open source should come as no surprise. Traditionally, the Internet has been 80% Linux and Unix-based systems since its creation. The first Internet services were started and maintained by government providers, who used Unix system’s built-in multitasking features and excellent speed to create a fast, reliable network. Linux, a modern version of that Unix ideal, has already established itself as the leading system for server-room deployment, but now the effects are beginning to trickle down to the desktop user level and workstation deployments, where they are discovering that Linux systems have workspace-ready features built in which other commercial operating systems are just now beginning to discover and implement.
Furthermore, Linux systems come with the guarantee that because they are open source, no commercial company can restrict their usage in the future. A platform ported to Linux can stay on Linux, without support dying out and constant upgrades creating problems down the road.
Finally, the inherent security of the Unix computing model guarantees the effectiveness of Linux without the worries over security problems. Because there are in effect no viruses which can infect a Linux system known, and no critical security exploits found in the systems even by government security standards, departments are also considering Linux as a measure to protect our national data under concerns over national security and the terrorist threat in our modern times.
